What to expect on the day of the funeral

Guidance, care and reassurance — when it matters most

The day of the funeral can feel emotional and unfamiliar, but you will not be facing it alone.

At Thompson Brothers & Sons, Craig and Simon will take care of every detail with dignity, professionalism and compassion — allowing you to focus on remembering your loved one.

Below is a gentle guide to help you understand what usually happens on the day, so you feel supported throughout.

Step 1 - Meeting point or family home

On the day, we will meet you at the agreed location. This may be your home, the home of your loved one, or another chosen place.

If a cortege has been arranged, the funeral director may lead on foot as a mark of respect.

From the very beginning, we will guide you calmly, explain each step, and ensure everyone feels supported.

Step 2 - The funeral procession

The hearse will lead the procession, followed by family and guests in our Jaguar limousines or private vehicles.

If you wish, the route can include places of personal significance, such as a family home or somewhere meaningful.

We will manage all timings carefully and keep everything running smoothly.

Step 3 - Arrival at the venue

On arrival, we will welcome you and guide family and guests into the venue.

Pallbearers — whether family, friends or our experienced team — will carry your loved one with care and dignity.

Floral tributes and personal items will be placed thoughtfully, reflecting the life being remembered.

Step 4 - The funeral service

The service is a time for reflection, remembrance and shared moments. Depending on your wishes, it may include:

  • readings or poems

  • personal tributes or eulogies

  • music or hymns

  • prayers or quiet reflection

Whether traditional or more personal in style, every detail is arranged so you can focus fully on the moment.

Step 5 - The committal

For cremation

The committal takes place within the crematorium chapel. This may include final words or a quiet moment of reflection.

For burial

The committal takes place at the graveside. Some families choose to place flowers or a personal item as a final tribute.

We will guide this part of the day gently and respectfully.

Step 6 - Leaving the venue

At the end of the service, guests will leave at their own pace.

There is time to pause, reflect, and speak with family if you wish. We will ensure everything remains calm and unhurried.

Step 7 - Gathering afterwards

Many families choose to gather afterwards to share memories and support one another.

This may take place at home or at a local venue. If helpful, we can offer guidance when making arrangements.

Step 8 - After the funeral

Our care continues beyond the day itself.

We can support you with:

  • collection of ashes

  • guidance on memorials and keepsakes

  • practical advice following the funeral

  • signposting bereavement support services

We remain here for you in the days and weeks ahead.
